Swim Vs Skim

An interesting article I chanced upon to read in The Hindu, a National Daily, last weekend.  Titled “The Reading Philosophy “the writer Shruti Rao, shares her experiences with the type of reader she is, and different types of readers, that she has come across. Some who swim through a book from cover to cover, some who skim through it while others skip parts of it, yet complete reading the book. She poses the same question to us. “What type of a reader are you?”

Unlike today where we buy books by a dozen or simply read e books on kindle, buying books during my childhood days was very rare.  I was allowed to join a library only during summer vacations. I made sure to join the library on the first day of holidays and continue till the last day. I devoured books, sitting all night, reading them.

Different types of readers I have come across are, series junkies ( my daughter is a huge fan of series), literary loyalists, polygamist reader, the re readers (my son qualifies under this category 😉 ), fiction fanatics, partial reader and so on.

I can relate to the writer’s question. As a book lover, I love reading fiction but do enjoy other genres as well. I generally like to finish the book I’ve picked up. But yes, I plead guilty on a few occasions, of skipping through a few paragraphs and in some cases not being able to progress beyond a few pages of the book. Maybe I couldn’t connect with the authors view or it was at a level beyond my limited comprehension. But most times, I enjoy to swim through the book cover to cover which leaves me refreshed.

What type of a reader are you?

  1. May be you can include another category – vegetable hot-pot/bisibele bath readers 😀 I would be under that category. I read anything that I find interesting – self help, crime and thriller, sci-fi, comedy, drama to name a few. I am a series fan too, but I don’t wait for the next book in the series to release, I like to read them all at once. The same with articles and blogs too. 😀😀

    1. Ahhh! An interesting category 😉
I enjoy most genres of books but somehow can’t pick up a Harry Potter or sci fiction books. Just not my cup of tea. Though my daughter made my watch the HP movies, I am not a great fan. Sorry to all the Potter fans 😀

      1. I was a potter fan, now I have grown out of that magical world. 😉 I like those sci-fi ones where they travel to different galaxies and all. That’s interesting. But my all time favourite is murder/mystery. 😀😀

      2. Then I would recommend this book “series” by Swedish authors – maj sjowall and per wahloo. Originally written in Swedish and translated to English. It’s crime stories, and really good. These books are way different from Jack Reacher or Poirot. 😀😀

  2. Swimming and skimming highly depends upon the book. Some books deserve your time and attention, even if it takes a while for you to get them completely, like The Fountainhead.
I cannot read series. I feel they are like a daily soap. The twists and turns are artificially added to sustain a longer run.

I’ve come across a similar article Radhika and it had interesting & fun names for different kind of readers. Escaped my memory now!
I enjoy most genres. But, I have to confess, I have this OCD sort of thing when it comes to books…whether it grips me or not , I have to finish it! 🙂

  5. I pick up anything that gives excitement to read and stop reading if it gets too boring for a long time in lot number of pages.

You are very lucky to have both kids into the habit of reading. Nothing is greater pleasure than that. 🙂 Thank you for picking up this article and sharing with all along with your view points. That was very thoughtful. 🙂

  6. Radhika, I think you are an avid reader and you swim cover to cover, isn’t it? I do swim across books but at my own steady pace. No series or sci fiction or huge fat novels for me 😦 Any thing, that catches my fancy, has the pleasure of my company 🙂

  7. Books have always been a part of my life. But for me the first chapter is important,if I cannot relate with what is written, I do not continue. The other day, I was reading a biography of Meena Kumari. The book was good but after a few chapter I did not want to continue. My connection with the actress is just for those three hours. I di not want to know about her. I returned the book to the library. I very rarely buy books, I get them from the library.
