An excited Amit rushed to their usual meeting place at the park. Seema and he were to wed that day much against her parent’s wishes. Instead he found a note from her brother which read,” We have killed Seema for disgracing our family.” Amit froze there with shock and disbelief!

It is shameful that in spite of calling ourselves a progressive country, we still get to read about such brutal murders, here in India. An honor killing is a homicide of a member of a family, due to the killer’s ( usually a member of the family) belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor to the family, or has violated the principles of a community or a religion, usually for reasons such as refusing to enter an arranged marriage, being in a relationship that is disapproved by their family, having sex outside marriage, becoming the victim of rape, dressing in ways which are deemed inappropriate, engaging in non-heterosexual relations or renouncing a faith.
It’s sad…really when will we develop?

Exactly! The most barbaric act one can do!

I really feel sad when we being barbarians criticize some historic barbarians for nothing.

We jump at any opportunity to criticize others, isn’t it ? Guess it comes naturally to many 😕

Yup. Just don’t remember that same criticism when doing such things.

If we can somehow start blaming ourselves for the correct reason and not have an ego clash, then we will change.

Yes, inflated ego and false legacy are the reasons in this case!

Oh my. What makes your tale even more chilling is the fact, as you point out, this is an ongoing happening even in modern time. So sad.

I know. It’s high time. In fact today’s paper carried an article about the Supreme Court’s verdict on the same. But at the grassroot level things take time to change.

Many years ago one of my distant cousin was killed by his brother’s inlaws who actually came to kill his brother.
These incidents destroy whole family. Very nice attempt Radhika.

There still need to bring a lot of change in thought process, beliefs and old age decaying rituals in our country.

great creative writing and really appreciate that you tied it into a controversial topic! I have often wondered how people could murder their own family members but it’s far too common 😦

Thanks Kate. That question bothers me too. The years of unconditional love for your child all wiped out just because her decision is different from yours? Ridiculous!

shows how self-centred so many of us are … real love is to respect and support even when their views differ from yours!

It is sad that parents and sometimes even siblings and relatives chip in to finish off their own blood just in the name of honor. Was reading about one that even asked the son if he had a last wish before finishing him off. What honor is left in killing. And then to kill your own. Ruthless!
You have touched a very important topic that is rampant in a country that is on its road to progress and development.

It is so horrific to read about such horrendous acts. It stumps me to imagine the extent of their cruelty!
