Sssh….Don’t Cry!!

True!

All of us have, at different point in time let the tears flow down. As children when we were hurt, denied a toy or a chocolate ….. as adults due to helplessness, frustration or being in pain caused by the action or words of a loved one. We have all succumbed to the emotional deluge.

“People cry, not because they are weak. It’s because they have been strong for too long” Johnny Depp

Crying is a natural way of letting off the pent up turmoil within one self. It is good to cry out the disappointment, pain, stress or anger. Unfortunately as kids and even adults for that matter, crying is viewed as a sign of weakness. We are always advised to control our emotions and be brave. One is shamed for being a sissy for letting the tears run, especially the boys. They are always reminded that boys unlike girls are strong and cannot cry.

When painful emotional energies are held within oneself, trapped in the fortress of our hearts, without an outlet, it often manifests as problems in other forms.

“I was removed from my high school basketball team. I locked myself in a room and cried” Micheal Jordon.

Crying is very essential for cleansing the soul and allowing peace and happiness to enter. It is unburdening the heavy emotional load off our heart. Tears are a natural mechanism to deal with overwhelming challenges that life throws at us at times. So just let them flow. They help us relieve pain and stress, improve our resolve to deal with the situation and help us connect with ourselves better.

“Sometimes a good cry can cure what a good laugh can’t!”

So what do you think? Is crying a strength or weakness?

  1. Crying is a natural response to sorrow. Its involuntary most of the times. But beyond a certain norm it could be a symptom of an underlying cause.
Crying in itself cannot be a weakness. It’s in fact a perfectly human reaction. Only robots can be otherwise 😊

  2. Oh this spoke to me ,…….if asked to advise I would it’s best to let tears flow ….it’s like detoxification of soul ……but in all honesty at personal level I still struggle to show my tears ….. I have my secret corners to hide when the dam breaks …. It just makes me feel more in control …. .. I guess different things work for different people

  3. You said it very well dear Radhika 🙂 I feel it as a very useful cleansing tool. I cry easily and everyone call me sissy and immature, but I feel very much light after the cry when something happens and it helps me not to pile up the emotions.

  4. But boys dont cry, cannot, will not. It is genetically imparted I guess, over ages of shaming 🙂 So now, its not the pent up sorrows that make us miserable but to find a friend crying. we are then clueless on the proper course of action

    1. Sadly it is so ESP, but not necessarily the right way to deal with those emotions. I fail to understand why something like crying is gender biased?
Now with some awareness about the same, it is definitely good to let go the tears. Even the movies now show men crying. 😀

      1. Is there a right way to deal with emotions?
I guess it is gender biased because men look ugly when they cry whereas women get away with anything, but I may be wrong 😐

      2. Each person has his/ her own way of dealing with emotions. Not sure about any one right way , ESP.
I don’t agree that men look ugly when they cry…. the same can be said for women too.
Guess, like you said earlier it’s just that we have been conditioned so since ages. It does take long to break that mindset in society and people.

      3. True true.. I was kidding, women too make weird faces when they cry, not that I made them and not that I assess beauty when people cry, at least not always 😁
But you are right, we men might revolt against the conditioning and cry, if only out of spite.

  5. It is not a sign of weakness but I am not sure whether it is a sign of strength, but it does give a lot of relief. Once a small boy told me he did not like Federer because he cried 😊. At emotional moments tears do come to my eyes but I have never cried in public.

  6. I would go with this quote “People cry, not because they are weak. It’s because they have been strong for too long” ..
And I cry while being in the company of my own self only! Not with anyone else though sometimes I too wish for a shoulder to lean upon.. but radhika they say crying can lessen your stress or grief, but never I have felt so.. maybe just a cleansing act of eyes..

    1. I am truly surprised Akhila. While most us cry in solitude, but the act of letting those tears flow has always been therapeutic. Like me many have concurred that it makes them feel much lighter. I wonder how come you don’t feel so…🤔

      1. Hmmm…. something above to my senses only could console me while I am depressed.. the tears are most of the times in my control..maybe that’s why tears couldn’t make me lighter..

  7. Well said Radhika!❤️
For me – It most certainly is not weakness, but a way to release all pent up anger, helplessness and frustration. It’s good to sometimes let go and free up exasperation, though I usually like to do it alone!

  8. What an interesting post, dear Radhika. Thank you! Sometimes tears show strength – the strength to be vulnerable and honest, don’t you think? It is not black and white though – our emotions are such a dance in the mist – we can never classify them in neat little boxes with pink ribbons and blue labels.

  10. Crying is a natural response and shows that one has emotions and is not heartless…not necessarily related to being strong/weak! Even the most strongest people reach a stage in life when they cry….it lessens the weight of the heart and releases all the hidden pressure…sometimes a trauma can also make a person prone to crying….i guess it’s ok to cry…it’s natural and that’s why nature has given us the tear glands 😛
To let you on in a secret…i myself am so emotional that even movie scenes can make me moist-eyed sometimes 🙈

  11. I have never thought a crying as a mark of weakness..be it the tears of joy or sorrow. It is a medium for human expression. It neither makes you weak nor tarnishes the idea of masculinity. To me, it is just another method of expressing your emotion.

  12. I have a different issue with crying 😄
I used to cry like any other person did and to be true it definitely reduced my pain and sadness. But now I am at a stage where I don’t cry at all.I feel sad and bad and my heart feels heavy and my throat chokes but tears don’t flow anymore. My eyes holds coffin to all those dead tears. And it isnt like I am strong now but it’s like I have no way to Express pain

    1. Yasmin first of all I believe you are a very strong woman. Do befriend tears again. They definitely help relieve the pain and hurt. Please don’t lock them up within.
May be that’s why your writings are so deep and profound….all that anguish comes out through your words. Keep writing and stay happy. Sending lots of love and hugs to you dear 💖😘🤗

  13. I would say that I am a very emotional person and that’s probably where my kids get it from. Emotions are such a strong thing and many people don’t know what to do with all of them. I especially like the picture that you posted!
