Connecting…

Letter writing was an art in itself. People who were fortunate to be a part of the pre digital time, would appreciate the joy of writing and receiving letters. Sadly like many other things, today it is buried in the folds of changing times.

Digital connect dominates the world today. While it is a quick and easy medium of communication, is steals the emotions attached with letters.

I am trying to bring out this comparison in my twin haiku below.

  5. Ya, so true, Ma’am, the joy of receiving a hand written letter, reading and re-reading is indescribable. I’m happy that I got to experience it in initial years of my childhood, and some of those letters are preserved still. It’s a wonderful experience to go through those hand written letters , something like seeing an old photo in writing.

    Our family was good at writing long letters. Last Diwali I sent greeting cards with letters to all my siblings and close friends. They were so thrilled 😁

  12. Superb poem on letter writing, Radhika and today this art has almost finished. I remember how many letters I must have written to friends, to relatives and felt so nice writing too. But today we have lost touch only using key board.

  15. Such beautiful poems both of them reflecting the essence of the experiences. I remember how much I enjoyed writing letters back home, really long ones 🙂 What a different world and feeling with those handwritten cursive words :))) Equal joy receiving them too, the waiting until they arrived.

    1. Absolutely Pragalbha. Those letters were written in detail sharing with our loved ones, all the news. Postman visited us every day with a stack of letters, and it would be such a happy time reading them. 😊
      I truly miss those simple joys of life .

  16. The old way, The Hope, along with the patience. Patience and Hope both are lost to the technology and adapted to a temporary two lines of quote to promote hope and patience, but the creator itself doesn’t has that is pity.

    1. Simon, today life moves at such a fast pace that we have left behind patience and many good things that it brought. This is sadly the time of instant gratification. We need to adapt yet hold on to the old values.

  19. Wonderful twin haiku Radhika. It was indeed a pleasure for me writing and receiving handwritten letters from friends and family. Hand written letters carried all the emotions, love,care and strengthened our bondings. Thanks for taking us back to those good old predigital days.

    1. I agree Eugenia. Technology has definitely made communication easier and faster, but has robbed that pleasure of personal connect and bonding that letters brought. It’s nice to hear that you still exchange cards with your husband. We did that till some time back…but somehow it stopped now.

      1. Well, I’ve been married 13 years to my current husband and the cards are priceless. During our lockdowns and when he went grocery shopping, he bought cards for both of us to give to one another. They mean a lot. ❤️

  21. So true, Mam, letters, and writing have emotions attached and the essence it carries can’t be felt with the current messaging apps solely. Through handwritten letters sometimes we can express those emotions too which we can’t say, but letters now are lost art.

  24. Love this Radhika and I am a biiiiiiig letter writer .. did I say big.. 🤣 and I miss it but with all of my writing these days I am sad I’ve missed it.. I said last night “I’m starting today”. so thanks for the inspirations. 💖💖❣️🙏🙏🙏

  25. That is so beautifully expressed, R. The stark contrast is such that I wonder whether it was all in a previous life – those good old days of penfriends and handwritten postcards during summer vacations! Why does technology have to be such a killer?

Ah yes, I recall all things with letter writing so vividly, the pen friends, inland letters, post cards, peeling of the stamps from the envelopes, such simple joys and ways of bonding and connecting with family and friends. Technology, though a boon in many ways has ensured a sacrifice of simplicity in every aspect of life!

  27. It’s so true Radhika, those days writing letters and sending through post. Now everything’s at your fingertips, messaging through various apps whatsapp, telegram, messenger, signal and more. Life goes on as technology becomes sophisticated.

    But now days every thing is digital.you get reply very soon but when letters were posted we always wait for our letters as my grandfather always says to me
    Love which exchange through letters can’t take place through this digital texting

  39. You have summed up the truth of it so well Radhika.
    The unpredictability of a letter physically travelling, the patient wait for a reply, and the joy of a letter being delivered to you, the joy in opening the envelope and reading the letter is not something the digital medium can ever achieve. And we used to think up every line to express as much emotions through selected words as we could – much unlike a string of emojis which convey our emotions today.
    I have preserved all the letters I received from my parents and my wife and often go through them at leisure. Don’t think we would do the same with the instant messaging chat history.

  40. I still write with fountain pens. It’s a very fulfilling experience for me. As a communication professional I use a lot of computer and modern day technologies, however, nothing gives me more satisfaction than writing with my pens. My two typewriters also gives me a lot of joy.

    1. It’s wonderful to know that there are people who still use the fountain pen Trishikh. I used to use the typewriter, typing out all dad’s correspondence on it, back in time. Now, thanks to technology, sadly I have lost touch with both the pen and the typewriter.

  43. As someone who wasn’t in the world in the pre-digital era, I think it’s such a shame that we’re letting this amazing practice die! I still loooove writing my heart out to friends on their birthdays and wish I can correspond with loved ones this way. Too bad most of the people I know are not fans of writing letters. Such a shame it’s not for free too, lol! Would love a pen pal anyway. 😉
