Her extended hours of training, hardly left Anita with any free time. But she didn’t mind that. An adventure junkie, living life on the edge, gave her an adrenaline. This time, she wanted to indulge in a passionate affair was with the muscular yet mesmerizing mountains. She was more than willing to give it her all, to be standing on top of his gigantic heights. It would be another item ticked from her bucket list of adventure series.

Finally after rigorous training for more than a year, the day of reckoning arrived. Away from the vale, at the base camp, Anita and her Sherpa were going through the final check list.  Walking out of their tent, she inhaled a whiff of the cold air.  Her eyes scanned the sky kissing rugged peaks. A tingle of sensations ran through her. The light grey skies didn’t seem threatening, as they started their ascent.

Half way up the ascent, the air became thinner and its iciness started to pierce the layers of her thermal clothing. Her boots were having a challenging time to get a good hold on the fresh snowfall which was ankle deep.

The outer layer of her suit was a little wet owing to the dampness in the wind.  Sleets of ice, sharp like pine needles pierced her body. She tried to numb the pain, shifting her focus only on reaching the summit. Her breathing was now in short gasps. Undaunted she continued.

Finally, after a grueling 25 hour climb, she reached the peak.  The breath-taking view of the serrated jagged peaks shrouded in a mystic cloak took her breath away.  Though dressed in monochrome, yet their allure was hard to resist.  The frosty blast of wind serenaded a cold symphony. From the dizzying heights, the world below appeared to be buried under duvet of white clouds.

Her soul brimmed with an ineffable euphoria, as she reflected on her journey to the top of the world.  Mixed emotions permeated her senses as she screamed in jubilation, “I did it! “.  With a prayer of gratitude, she marveled at the creator and the beauty of his magnificent creation.

Romancing the Mountains!

Pristine clouds waft

at their own pace

dance with the winds

crooning careless whispers

The mighty Himalayas

sentries of the north citadel

rugged and macho, stand tall

their persona emits a majestic aura

Beneath a misty veil

a rendezvous at the peak

kisses moist with the icy breeze

they entwine in a flirtatious embrace

A dreamy passion lingers

the heaven rising affair

casts a mystic allure

inks an ethereal romance.

Day #10 : **Theme Kaleidoscope of thoughts**

Serrated and jagged, it is the citadel at the northern frontiers of my country, India. A gigantic personality, it commands admiration and awe from its onlookers.

From time immemorial, the Himalayas have stood tall spreading across five countries, Bhutan, Nepal, India, China and Pakistan. The name Himalaya has a Sanskrit origin.” Him” meaning snow and “aalaya” meaning abode, which literally means the abode of snow.

The Himalayas comprise over a hundred mountain ranges, including the tallest peak of Mt. Everest at 8,848 m above sea level. Since ancient times it has attracted pilgrims and mountaineers in great numbers.

My ode to the mighty mountains and some pictures  taken during our trips to the Himalayas!

The cold northern winds blow, rumbling across the jagged edges,

blanketing the sky piercing mountains, with a cloak of white satin snow.

The untamed and rugged beauty, incites the strong hearted souls,

to tread its arduous  terrain, and celebrate victory at its peak.

Clouds caress the peaks as they pass, whispering secret messages,

when the sun kisses the luminous peak, it blushes to a golden hue.

The eyes admires,  the vast expansive artistry of nature,

and the heart soaks in, the pristine spiritual energy!

Mana – The last Indian Village

img_0467

The dawn of 17 May 2013 was a memorable one. The darshan at the holy shrine of Badrinath rejuvenated our soul with spiritual bliss.

After recharging our souls, it was time to recharge the body too. We stopped by a local eatery for some hot breakfast. Then we headed out to Mana, a mere 3 kms from there.

The excitement among us was palpable as Mana is the last village of India. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3200 meters, it is 24 kms from the India and Tibet/China border. A small population of about 600 inhabit the place.

On the onset of winter, the entire area gets covered with a blanket of snow. The weather becomes very hostile for survival.  The villagers then migrate to the lower plains from October to April.

Their houses typically are made of stones and plastered with mud. They have slate tiled sloping roofs. Most houses have kitchen gardens where they primarily grow spinach, potato and cauliflower for their livelihood. The women are endowed with fine craft skills. Their adept fingers knit beautiful sweaters, shawls, caps, mufflers and carpets which find many takers.

A shop there having the distinction of being the last Indian shop. People generally buy a drink or some eatable to tell the folks back home that they shopped from there!

Just a few meters away from the shop, the Saraswati River merges with the Alaknanda. Further ahead is a cave called Vyas Guha where it is believed that sage Veda Vyasa resided and composed the entire Mahabharata.

After spending about an hour there, capturing moments to carry with us, we headed back. Today writing this post has taken me back on that beautiful trip down the memory lane!

Himalayan Ecstasy

Sharing a few pictures of the Mighty Himalayas on our visit to the holy shrine of Badrinath, a few years back. The spectacular scenic beauty enroute and the positive vibrations at the temple rejuvenated the body and soul.

“The magnificent mountains of the Himalayas soared up to the heavens to kiss it, the clouds whispering and caressing its high peaks. Serrated and snow-capped, these gigantic mountains were a sight to behold. The eyes admiring the pristine beauty in awe, the heart soaking in the pure energy of the tranquil atmosphere and the mind experiencing the spiritual bliss.  The evening rays of the sun painting its peak to a golden blush. Standing in front of the majestic mountains felt like the eons of time stood still. ”
