Her extended hours of training, hardly left Anita with any free time. But she didn’t mind that. An adventure junkie, living life on the edge, gave her an adrenaline. This time, she wanted to indulge in a passionate affair was with the muscular yet mesmerizing mountains. She was more than willing to give it her all, to be standing on top of his gigantic heights. It would be another item ticked from her bucket list of adventure series.

Finally after rigorous training for more than a year, the day of reckoning arrived. Away from the vale, at the base camp, Anita and her Sherpa were going through the final check list.  Walking out of their tent, she inhaled a whiff of the cold air.  Her eyes scanned the sky kissing rugged peaks. A tingle of sensations ran through her. The light grey skies didn’t seem threatening, as they started their ascent.

Half way up the ascent, the air became thinner and its iciness started to pierce the layers of her thermal clothing. Her boots were having a challenging time to get a good hold on the fresh snowfall which was ankle deep.

The outer layer of her suit was a little wet owing to the dampness in the wind.  Sleets of ice, sharp like pine needles pierced her body. She tried to numb the pain, shifting her focus only on reaching the summit. Her breathing was now in short gasps. Undaunted she continued.

Finally, after a grueling 25 hour climb, she reached the peak.  The breath-taking view of the serrated jagged peaks shrouded in a mystic cloak took her breath away.  Though dressed in monochrome, yet their allure was hard to resist.  The frosty blast of wind serenaded a cold symphony. From the dizzying heights, the world below appeared to be buried under duvet of white clouds.

Her soul brimmed with an ineffable euphoria, as she reflected on her journey to the top of the world.  Mixed emotions permeated her senses as she screamed in jubilation, “I did it! “.  With a prayer of gratitude, she marveled at the creator and the beauty of his magnificent creation.

Haibun – Voice & Watch

album

Cleaning the cupboard this morning, I glance upon some old albums. Since the onset of digital cameras, the old pictures simply have been lying inside for a long time. Glad to have some leisure time at hand, I decide to walk down the memory lane with the many photo albums. Wiping off the fine layer of dust settled on them, I sit back to enjoy the journey ,which house a treasure trove of memories.

Flipping the pages of the album

I watch beautiful memories unfold

the sounds of joy come alive

I am lost in nostalgia

of perfect moments captured

for eternity!

Many questions haunt me often. Who am I ? What is my purpose in life?  Am I Radhika, the daughter, wife, mother or is there any other identity to myself. They intrigue me.  There is a mystic aura that envelopes the phrases such as Karma, destiny, spirituality etc. I try in vain to find answers to these baffling questions through books, gurus, experiences, meditation. In the cosmic wilderness, the earth is a mere dot.  Within that dot, we are the millions of nano specks, the inhabitants of the planet. So how minuscule is my identity in this universe?

My quest continues

to probe deep into my being

to discover my soul

hidden under a veil of ignorance

to find the elusive answer

and experience self realization.
