On a hot summer afternoon, standing in my balcony, I watched my daughter and her friend coming back from school. They seemed to be moving around, jumping and laughing out loud. I wondered what they were up to. As they got closer I saw that they were trying to step on each other’s shadow!! Oh, what fun they were having. They were oblivious to the passer-by’s, totally engrossed in their world and drowning the neighbourhood in their sweet giggles. I enjoyed watching them, until they finally decided to enter their respective apartments.
This set me thinking………….Why in this journey of growing up into adults do many of us kill the child in us? Why do we always have to behave like “grown-ups”? Is it because we are caught in the rigmarole of life or is it that we are more worried about “what will people think syndrome”?? !!
Children are a bundle of creativity and curiosity. Their innocence and childish banter touches your heart. Laughter is their constant companion and they find happiness in small things. After a tiff or a fight with their friend, the very next day their slates are clean. Forgiving comes easily to them. Their make believe games, taking on the role of their brave super hero, entering into the world of fairy tales with their favourite character, they sure know to paint their world so colourful.
I am reminded of the song “Bachpan ke din bhi kya din the, udthe firthe titli banke” !! Which means
O! Those carefree days of childhood , when we flew about like butterfies!!
When was the last time you just let go and were happy to awaken the child in you?

Thanks Vishal. Our childhood cannot be back, but we can definitely keep our child like qualities alive. It helps us take on the life in a more relaxed manner.

U r so true Radhika .. As we grow we forget the child like traits in us or suppress it eventually . but if we closely observe that childish nature could be one of our sources of happiness isn’t it.

beautiful post… the child within us never dies! it is the innocence of that child which keeps some semblance of the ‘real self’.. only, we somehow manage to suppress the child and wear the mask of ‘mature’ grown ups… inspiring article radhika… let the children with in us bloom..and bring some fresh air into our lives

Very rightly said Hari. All of do have those qualities deep within us, but unfortunately long term suppressing has put layers of mask on it. Let’s unmask those layers . I seriously hold back on doing something childish thinking, what will people say?😁😁

We have all the time in the earth to do simple things which make us laugh and be happy. But like you said, we are ‘grown-ups’ and pretend that we don’t have time.

It is fun to be silly and vain…we forget this simple thing once we think we have grown up. ‘Log kya kahenge’ should be ignored sometimes.
This one time I went for dinner with my girl friends and we laughed and laughed like crazy on silly jokes and turned a blind eye to others. When I told A about it he said he would’ve ignored me and left from there. I sweetly told him…that’s why you are not invited. 😀

Oh yes Varsha. Only when the girl gang meets, we laugh it out like crazy. My daughter once complained that she could hear our laughter down the road, we were on the fifth floor😁😁

Hahaha…I can understand. I remember when I went home for A Jr’s delivery and Mom had some friends over for some kitty party. I was in my room. She kept calling me out but I didn’t go. I could hear them cracking seriously inappropriate jokes very loudly and wanted them to not heed me and stop having fun. 😂😂

Exactly! There will be no pain and fake faces if we could reconnect to child inside!
Since I’m a teacher, my time spent with small kids gives me a chance to keep that child alive in me!
You are a true writer Radhika who think deep and get inspired from every small act which most of us neglect! These are true moments of our life! 💖💖

We just need the simplicity like the child. If we able to keep that simplicity of the childhood we don’t have to regret for loosing it in lives. That simplicity always makes us alive. Very nice post on self-awakening, Radhika.

I agree Sayanti. Childhood is infused with simple likes, joys and dreams. The innocence adds beauty to every aspect of their lives. If we can kindle that once again, I am sure life will be much brighter!
Good to read your feedback after a long hiatus Sayanti 😊

You have rekindled the child in all your readers:) and they are all jumping, skipping, hopping, chasing butterflies, splashing in muddy puddles, drawing pictures on walls, licking icecreams..
Jokes apart, Radhika, you have helped all the grand old adults to let their hair down, be happy, innocent and naive, let go off their egos…I am reminded of what I teach in behavioural sciences on Sigmund Freud’s Id, Ego and superego states that are present in all individuals irrespective of their age. Id is that unfailing quality of a child that does everything by reflexes instantaneously without thinking of the consequences or outcomes, Ego is that state which waits for the correct solution and Superego is one that keeps distinguishing what is right and wrong, moral and immoral and so on and this becomes complex and as you rightly said “what others will think syndrome”!
I just read Meenakshi’s poem on this effervescent bubbly attitude called child to which she has so rightfully given the credits to this insighful post!

Perhaps we need to bring it out more often :-)….

It’s only that we fail to wake up the dormant child within us from its deep slumber. Once we pay heed to its voice , our stress will reduce to a great extent!
